The immigration debate continues as advocates seek aggressive action to undermine anti-immigrant extremists who seek to implement divisive rhetoric in our media and in Congress. President Biden has taken common-sense measures to rejuvenate and rebuild an immigration system that was frequently targeted by his predecessor. Just days into his presidency, Biden faced a large influx of migrants at the southern border due to economic uncertainty in Central and South America. These countries have been affected by reckless leadership and corruption, leaving millions without basic security. Even after several months as president, Biden is still dealing with issues at the border. The administration has not outlined any clear and effective direction to suppress additional arrivals.
Our firm has applauded the Biden administration’s effort to reform policies within the DHS. However, the administration has remained hesitant to recognize and address the need to establish equitable solutions for migrants seeking asylum within the United States. In the midst of a pandemic, the United States is facing a large influx of migrants at the border that requires focused attention. Many migrants are seeking asylum, but our asylum system is incapable of processing such high numbers. To identify the root causes of migration, President Biden appointed Vice President Kamala Harris as the administration’s envoy.
The causes of immigration cannot be easily explained in just a few words. This blog cannot fully investigate those conditions. It can logically be argued that the root of the problems driving immigrant migration to the United States is predominantly economic. The widespread presence of gangs and cartels that plague migrants’ home countries with violence and drugs has also taken a lasting toll. There are several cases in which this is especially evident. In Venezuela, socialist and anti-democratic leadership has led to hyperinflation. Political persecution led by the corrupt regime of Hugo Chávez has deeply affected Venezuelan society. In Colombia, drugs and violence have left thousands of citizens without security, creating a constant state of fear. These conditions force migrants to travel through dangerous environments in search of hope.
Vice President Kamala Harris’s role has two sides. She is capable of reducing uncertainty and chaos at the border while bringing attention back to the causes of the influx. Her visit to the southern border was met with criticism after being delayed for several months, although Harris remained optimistic about her role. On Friday, the Vice President toured immigration facilities and met with young immigrants. According to an Al Jazeera report, Harris spoke with girls between the ages of nine and sixteen. The young girls spoke about their journey to the Mexican border and how they escaped bitter violence. The five girls are being held by U.S. Customs and Border Protection while awaiting their fate. Harris reaffirmed her stance on immigration and identified some of the root causes of migration stemming from violence and corruption. “The lack of economic opportunities, very often violence, corruption, and food insecurity, including fear of cartels and gang violence.” Harris continued: “We are talking about children, we are talking about families, we are talking about suffering. And our approach has to be thoughtful and effective.”
In early June, the Vice President faced criticism from Republicans for her lack of leadership during the migration crisis. Republicans echoed criticism of her delay in visiting the border and described her as detached from addressing border issues. The trip marked the Vice President’s first visit to the United States–Mexico border. Republican critics believe Harris’s last-minute travel plans were influenced by former President Trump’s scheduled visit on the 30th. Regardless, Harris’s role is crucial.
Harris reiterated the importance of examining and “addressing the root causes” that have led to “insecurity” in many Central and South American countries. Rather than examining a single factor, Harris indicated that the approach would involve multiple aspects of the necessary change.
Harris is calling for “economic and humanitarian solutions” that improve conditions for migrants in their home countries. Harris’s earlier message of “do not come,” directed at Guatemalans in early June, appears to be in stark contrast to these “humanitarian solutions.”
Harris’s message of exclusion was met with progressive backlash. Progressive Democrats continue to pressure the Biden Administration to enact aggressive immigration reform that prioritizes the humane treatment of migrants and eliminates the bureaucracy immigrants face when migrating to the United States. Rather than sending a “do not come” message, progressives want fair and swift action for migrants who are fleeing violence and corruption.
The Law Offices of James A. Welcome recognize the remarkable value of a fair and ethical immigration system. Our team has heard countless stories of tragedy and desperation that served as the catalyst for clients seeking to flee their homeland. Many accounts highlight that the reason for migration was not because they wanted to leave, but because they had to do so for safety and economic stability. The decision to leave one’s home is not simple; immigrants face the challenge of leaving their beloved families behind in pursuit of a better life.
The root causes of migration must be analyzed, and the United States must help nations that have been plagued by corruption and hardship for years. As a global leader in human rights, the United States must recognize its critical role in helping people abroad. From South America to the Middle East, the displacement of millions has lasting effects. The United States must end immigration policies that discourage legal immigration. The United States should welcome foreign talent and embrace diversity. This is not to say that border security should be compromised. Most Americans agree on establishing a strong and secure border. Effective reform can work simultaneously with enhanced security.
Reforming our immigration process requires strong policies that reduce court backlogs, prioritize asylum cases (those fleeing domestic abuse, violence, or political persecution), place millions on a path to citizenship, and ultimately modernize immigration laws that have not experienced significant changes for decades. Immigration provides abundant benefits, and not all of them are tied to the rich culture immigrants bring to our nation. There is no doubt about the advantages of immigration when it comes to economic recovery efforts during COVID. Many immigrants played key roles in the “essential worker” category. The United States labor market is large enough for immigrants to work and help our nation move forward against foreign competitors. The United States has an obligation to welcome foreign talent to work alongside the tremendous domestic talent we already possess. America’s growth rate is not impressive, and the possibility of being displaced as the world’s leading economic power is becoming increasingly conceivable. Immigrants are, and always have been, the lifeblood of our culture and economy. Our country will require additional immigration to meet the challenges of the next decade of growth.
