Obama’s executive authority to protect millions of immigrants was blocked on Monday, February 16, by U.S. District Court Judge Andrew Hanen in Texas. Texas and 25 other states, mainly controlled by Republican governors, went to court to block the implementation of DACA and DAPA. Administration was supposed to begin accepting applications on Wednesday for DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. DACA is expected to apply to 600,000 people for temporary deportation relief and work authorization.
The execution of DAPA, Deferred Action for Parents of Americans, has also been put on hold and is expected to have a bigger impact, applying to 4 million immigrants. The White House will appeal and urges the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals to reverse the decision. Read more about Obama’s proposals to protect immigrants and the Republican’s actions to block it here!
