From Home to Work to the Hospital

According to data collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are 3 million work related injuries and illnesses per year in the private sector. Some of those injuries and illnesses are reported from employees you would not think of. For example, health-care workers are classified among the highest employees that experience a high rate of injuries. Most of their injuries come from lifting patients. The construction industry remains with the highest fatality rate in the U.S. followed by the transportation and warehouse industry. Work related injuries can result in a loss of income, chronic pain, medical expenses, a decrease in the quality of life, and psychological suffering.

If you are injured at work, here are some things that you should keep in mind:

  • DO NOT DELAY in reporting your injury!! You could increase the chances of your claim being disputed by the insurance company.
  • If your employer disputes your injury claim, contact a lawyer immediately.
  • PROTECT YOUR RIGHTS: Failure to file the proper form can hurt your case. The official claim for workers’ compensation is not the same form that your employer must file, thus, you must file your own claim and not rely on your employer’s.
  • If you do not receive a benefit check within two weeks of becoming injured, you must contact your employer’s workers’ compensation insurance carrier.
  • Your Immigration Status does not prevent you from receiving workers’ compensation!!
