The Law Offices of James A. Welcome is thrilled to announce an exciting partnership with Sacred Heart University’s Political Science Department. This collaboration, which spans the spring semester, will provide 30 students with a unique opportunity to shadow our legal team and complete 15 service-learning hours. The program is designed to give students a hands-on experience in immigration law while examining the real-world impact of policies on refugees and migrant communities in Connecticut.

The course, designed and led by Professor Kathleen O’Gara, focuses on understanding immigration policies and their effects on people’s lives. Through service-learning, students will observe how laws and policies shape the day-to-day realities of refugees and migrants. This course allows students to reflect on the consequences of federal immigration policies—both the intended outcomes and the unintended challenges they create.

Today, Attorney Marina Brakefield, an Immigration Attorney at the Law Offices of James A. Welcome with more than 20 years of experience, visited Sacred Heart University to engage directly with students. She shared insights into our firm’s immigration practice, discussed the types of cases we handle, and highlighted the importance of advocating for immigrant communities. During her visit, Attorney Brakefield extended an invitation to students, encouraging them to participate in this collaboration.

Students who complete their service-learning hours with our firm will gain valuable experience working on cases that help individuals and families navigate the immigration process. They will have the opportunity to collaborate with our team of attorneys and legal staff, learning about the challenges and successes in immigration law.
