CT Driver’s Licenses for Undocumented Residents

While Washington discusses a national Immigration Reform, Connecticut and many other states are passing their own immigration laws, as well. On Thursday morning, the Connecticut Senate endorsed a bill that will allow undocumented workers to obtain a special driver’s license. It is expected that Governor Malloy will sign the bill and the laws will take effect on January 1, 2015.

The purpose of the bill is public safety. This is good news for undocumented immigrants who are already driving, but do not have licenses or the proper training. In addition, the cars they are driving are often unregistered or uninsured. The bill will allow undocumented residents to receive the proper training to be responsible drivers on CT roads.

Since DMV officials will not always be able to verify the authenticity of documents or confirm an applicant’s identity, the licenses will be used only for driving purposes, not for identification purposes.

The DMV will also conduct a background check for any convicted felonies. The DMV would then mail a learner’s permit to the address provided as an additional precaution.
