Attorney Welcome Gets His Client Offered Compromise in a Reduced Sentence

In 2007, a woman from Ansonia, Connecticut was arrested during a sting operation when she accompanied four men during a burglary. On the night of the arrest, the woman and her four male companions broke into a drug dealer’s home where they were able to pick up cell phones, cash, drugs, and electronic devices. The sting occurred when one of the phones rang and a man inquired about buying some drugs. The man on the other end of the call turned out to be an officer for the Shelton Police Department.

The woman reportedly struggled with substance abuse issues and was offered a suspension, during the prosecution, in order to attend a drug recovery program. The sentence contained the provision that, if the woman successfully completed the program and avoided being arrested for two years, the judge could allow her charges to be dropped.

The Senior Assistant State Attorney declared that the woman’s sentence appeared light compared to her accomplices, who received one to four years in prison. Burglary can be defined as entering any building (home, school, retail store, etc.) to commit a crime.

Burglary convictions might typically involve the following penalties:

  • Felony on record
  • 1 to 40 years in prison
  • Fines up to $15,000

The penalties for selling drugs in the state vary depending on the type of drug being sold and how many offenses the individual has had, but anyone who is found guilty could face multiple years of imprisonment and fines that may cost several thousands of dollars. Our experienced Connecticut defense lawyer, James A. Welcome, represented the woman from the beginning to the end of her case. His hard work had an impact on obtaining a positive outcome in her case.

Attorney Welcome: Advocating for Redemption

The woman was alleged to have helped mastermind the crimes and was alleged to have been present, but never actually participated, as she never stepped out of the car. The case was resolved in 2009, when the woman was given the option of completing a drug recovery program. Attorney Welcome presented the fact that she had been working towards changing her life and possibly serving in the United States Air Force. This second shot helped her to recover her life and move forward with freedom.
