The Comprehensive Immigration Reform is finally addressing many issues in immigration law that need to change. As with all reforms, however, it has challengers who oppose the changes. Today, Monday, May 20, a labor union representing 12,000 immigration officers is planning to publically oppose the immigration plan, claiming that the bill fails to take into consideration the needs of USCIS personnel and law enforcement officers. The president of the union has added his name to a letter to Congress detailing their concerns and urging lawmakers to oppose the bill.

In the meantime the Senate Judiciary Committee is currently continuing its discussion of the bill this morning. S. 744, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act includes increasing Border Security, putting pressure on employers to verify the status of potential employees through E-Verify, and offer legal status and a path to citizenship for approximately 11,000 undocumented immigrants in the U.S.

This bill would mean a major change in Immigration. Therefore, it will face many challenges and will not please everyone. There is no question, however, that the current immigration system is flawed and needs reform, whether or not it the laws are perfect. The proposed plan offers many positive changes to immigration and is a step in the right direction for many citizens, immigrants, and family still being hurt by the current system.
